Expertise isn’t Everything

Expertise isn't Everything
What I wish I knew in my first job?

Expertise isn’t everything.

Your manager doesn’t know everything. Your boss’s boss doesn’t either. Even your CEO doesn’t know everything.

What is a Leader’s main job? To lead us into the future. And NOBODY knows the future. How could you?

A few weeks ago my keynote to Asian STEM college students aimed to do one thing: Give them the confidence to Lead.

Not once they build their experience. Right now.

“Successful people ask better questions, and as a result, they get better answers.”

Because the secret isn’t being an expert. It’s asking powerful questions.

When you ask the right questions, they:

• Demonstrate your critical thinking

• Re-direct people to think in a new direction

• Give you and others the opportunity to learn

• Opens previously unknown opportunities

• Activate the mind‘s creative thinking

• Nurtures collaboration

In fact, I had no expertise in my first job because my training was in chemical engineering and my first job was in packaging.

But it turned out, I didn’t need expertise. I needed curiosity.

By asking questions… I discovered a critical design flaw from our vendors in my biggest project. And in the end, that product was awarded New Product of the Year! 🏆

Don’t think of asking questions as highlighting what you don’t know.

Asking questions emphasizes your quest to know more.

Ask Away!
