The Secret to Breaking Through Bias

March 26, 2025

The Secret to Breaking Through Bias
McKinsey states that women remain underrepresented in every stage of the corporate pipeline.

And… It’s even worse for women of color, especially black women and Latinas.

I’ve felt this myself and don’t need the stats to prove it… but it’s helpful to have them to backup my experience. Is this your experience too?

The gap has everything to do with bias.

Bias built into hiring systems.

Bias built into promotion systems.

Bias built into manager’s brains.

Bias built into your brain.

Bias exists everywhere… and unfortunately, always will be because it’s how the brain works. It’s often unconscious.

Most people don’t even realize they have it. Or are acting on it.

So how do you address something so prevalent? so invisible?

Just because it’s a big problem doesn’t mean you can’t do anything about it. Especially for yourself.

My favorite strategy is to use → Surprise.

Since this is a brain problem… I love using a brain solution. Emotions are a powerful driver in the brain. And Surprise is a powerful key to unlock bias.

“Each time a woman stands up for herself, she stands up for all women.”

How?

Well… Surprise is triggered by seeing something unexpected. Literally, a break in expectations.

And what are biases? A set of expectations.

When you Surprise people with what you can do… then you literally break through bias they may have of you.

(Even if they didn’t realize they had them in the first place).

Instead of seeing you as a woman… They see you as an impactful professional.

So who’s with me? Let’s shock them all!

Happy National Women’s History Month 🎉
