Funny how nothing changes around you… yet everything can change in a second.
Last week were took our first big family vacation in a very long time… to Hawaii! It was marvelous and we made many amazing memories together.
But even on vacations… not everything is wonderful.
On one particular day, the sun was hot. In Hawaii that’s usually a good thing! Except we weren’t on the beach, we were climbing a volcanic crater today.
My youngest son’s feet were dragging as he started lagging behind. His shoulders were moping. He was complaining about how hot he was.
And we were just 10 minutes into our hike.
I said to him, “You know… if you want to turn back, now’s the time. I’ll go back with you. But I thought you were old enough now to do things like this, being 7 years old. I wouldn’t have even tried to climb up there with you just a few years ago, you were too young. What do you think? Are you big enough now?”
He didn’t look at me, but he nodded his head.
And I didn’t hear one more complaint from him as we climbed up and down 560 feet. In fact… soon he ran to the front and led our group for the rest of the steep climb!
"Whatever we decide we want to do is what we do."
Sometimes we are reacting to what’s catching our attention at the moment. Like feeling the hot sun + feeling the hard work of your muscles climbing up and up.
If you let it, this focus can take over your whole experience.
You can start to lose motivation. You start to procrastinate. You focus on how hard the work is. Things feel heavy and hard. And your progress forward slows down more and more.
I know I’ve felt this in my job before.
But it doesn’t have to be this way.
Without changing the work. Without changing the tasks. Without even changing your shoes or the tools you are using.
You can decide.
Decide that you are up for the challenge.
Decide that you have what it takes.
You are old enough. Strong enough. Smart enough. Resourceful enough.
Decide you will make it to the top, to the end.
That’s it.
Decide.
And watch how everything changes… without changing at all.
