Your manager doesn’t know everything. Your boss’s boss doesn’t either. Even your CEO doesn’t know everything.
What is a Leader’s main job? To lead us into the future. And NOBODY knows the future. How could you?
A few weeks ago my keynote to Asian STEM college students aimed to do one thing: Give them the confidence to Lead.
“Successful people ask better questions, and as a result, they get better answers.”
When you ask the right questions, they:
• Demonstrate your critical thinking
• Re-direct people to think in a new direction
• Give you and others the opportunity to learn
• Opens previously unknown opportunities
• Activate the mind‘s creative thinking
• Nurtures collaboration
In fact, I had no expertise in my first job because my training was in chemical engineering and my first job was in packaging.
But it turned out, I didn’t need expertise. I needed curiosity.
By asking questions… I discovered a critical design flaw from our vendors in my biggest project. And in the end, that product was awarded New Product of the Year!
Don’t think of asking questions as highlighting what you don’t know.
Asking questions emphasizes your quest to know more.
Ask Away!
