I did a double-take 👀

November 17, 2023

I stared at my first job offer letter with excitement… and horror.

It was for a 𝘱𝘢𝘤𝘬𝘢𝘨𝘪𝘯𝘨 engineer position at Procter & Gamble. How could this be? I was graduating as a 𝘤𝘩𝘦𝘮𝘪𝘤𝘢𝘭 engineer in May.

It must be a mistake, I thought.

But then I remembered… At the end of my 2nd internship, they asked me what kind of job I wanted if I returned as a full-time employee.

“I want to work on PUR,” I said. The water filtration brand spoke to my heart, with a philanthropy that helped clean the dirtiest water to keep people healthy.

And this packaging job was with PUR.

I realized I didn’t specify what function… But I would never have guessed they’d put me somewhere outside of my training!

Well, what choice do I have? I loved the company and the brand. So I decided to try it.

Fast forward… and this job turned out to be the greatest gift. Not because I loved the job. (In fact, I did NOT like package engineering. 😂)

But I learned that I could do a job I wasn’t classically trained in.

And be good at it.

Taking a project or job that you are fully qualified for is… taking the comfortable road.

You’re gonna nail it.

But you’re not going to grow.

You already know how to do it, don’t you?

What if you look for something that equally excites you and scares you?

“But I don’t know if I can do it.”

Yeah, that thought crossed my mind too.

The thing is… being capable doesn’t mean you already have all the skills and knowledge.

Being capable is knowing you can acquire the skills, gather the knowledge.

Because you can find other experts.

Because you know how to learn.

Because you are resourceful.

Because you trust yourself to figure it out.

And everything is figureout-able.
