The gap has everything to do with bias.
Bias built into hiring systems.
Bias exists everywhere… and unfortunately, always will be because it’s how the brain works. It’s often unconscious.
Most people don’t even realize they have it. Or are acting on it.
So how do you address something so prevalent? so invisible?
“One step at a time is all it takes to get you there.” – Emily Dickinson
Just because it’s a big problem doesn’t mean you can’t do anything about it. Especially for yourself.
My favorite strategy is to use → Surprise.
Since this is a brain problem… I love using a brain solution. Emotions are a powerful driver in the brain. And Surprise is a powerful key to unlock bias.
“Each time a woman stands up for herself, she stands up for all women.”
How?
Well… Surprise is triggered by seeing something unexpected. Literally, a break in expectations.
And what are biases? A set of expectations.
When you Surprise people with what you can do… then you literally break through bias they may have of you.
(Even if they didn’t realize they had them in the first place).
Instead of seeing you as a woman… They see you as an impactful professional.
So who’s with me? Let’s shock them all!
